When a Body Dies

There are facts about body death that you don’t think about until you are staring at someone close-er to dying than you have ever been. Agéd dying is so much different than movie dying. I am wishing for explosive blasts and car crashes and blood. Mud and dirt and tears. At this moment, I’m sure the guillotine would be a better end than body death: general organ failure.

Unlike action heroes cut down in their prime, when bodies are closer to the ashes-and-dust phase, they don’t work very well. It is shocking. Skin is like overripe peaches: easily bruised and torn away with the slightest handling. Anemic blood comes closer to resembling fruit juice.

Liquids dribble out with no force as the body weight drops and the human frame seems to become depressurized. Bloody urine is a strange bright color against the toilet edges, a wet slash down the front of the porcelain, and an awkward curve where the commode meets tile floor.

When a Body dies, the waste removal systems get clogged and sluggish, and even the pharmaceutical draino causes only momentary bursts of vile smelling, ammonia-laden stool. Valves all over the body breakdown, and past a certain point, replacing the hardware becomes pointless. Every screw is stripped, and nothing holds in. There are no anchors for attachments. They all pull out.

Tissues inside become as weak and flimsy as the skin outside. Abdominal walls tear and organs once held in place begin to spill outward, herniated bulging controlled with wide bands of elastic and ample widths of soft Velcro.

The worst is watching the person, the human inside the body, become detached from the Death of the Body. After awhile, watching your own body die, watching your own flesh lose control leads to an acceptance of the Body Death. I see in the eyes, the wanting – wanting to do certain things and not being able to do them. Wanting the Body to at least behave like a trained dog: Sit! Stand! Roll over! As these things become impossible, there is an acceptance of what can never happen on command again.

Acceptance of help, of assistance. There is help with love, there is help for pay. But thankfully, for this situation, there is help. There has been help when it was most needed. Throw money at the problem. Hired nurses, caregivers, staff. It doesn’t matter whose husband, brother, sister, cousin…get someone else to clean up as the body decays, dies, melts away flake by flake.

When the body dies but the person who has always inhabited it is not ready to die with it there is an awkward silence. An anger, a denial, and perhaps withdrawal. Detachment from the body, with all of its disgusting death throes. The here-and-now, present in the moment becomes far too painful to experience.

And so the questions, “How do you feel?” And “where does it hurt?” Become the most painful questions of all, because the real answer is “I don’t want to know.”

“I want, more than anything, to leave this body. To disassociate with this mass that disobeys and derides me at every unclear, rattling breath. That contradicts my desires in spitefulness, leaving me lying, unable to move, soaked in my cold feces.

“And so, I must tune it out. Leave it behind. Watch TV. Look at the faces of my loved ones. Leave the body behind, damn fool thing, to do whatever the hell it wants, without me. Sleeping is nice. There’s no body in dreams. I long for dreams of hauling, moving, hammering, building, riding my bicycle, dancing with my wife, and even fathering children. Any dream where my body was strong, where it did exactly what I told it, and so, we were together, body and soul, as being human should be.”

Is that what is in the dreams?

What is happening when the flickering blue-veined eyelids stretch over bulging eyeballs? What can the dying eyes still see? They still like pretty girls, as evidenced by the blonde Barbie realtor my dad picked, instead of the charming Ken doll.

The whole thing is just horrible. Not because my dad is going to die, because we all are going to die, but rather because my dad’s body will die and he won’t want to go with it. That is sad. That my father’s soul and heart will not get an option to linger behind, fulfilling whatever impetus remains of life. Whatever final adventures my father wanted to achieve.

Take the train to the Grand Canyon. See more of the world. Watch his grandchildren graduate from High School, or College. Whatever it is that was important to him, whatever his work was in this life, will he feel that he has completed it? Will he be at peace when his Body dissolves into mush – no more individualized cells, doing small jobs in harmony; instead, poisoned and broken fluids all running together inside, ending the lungs, heart, bowels.

Sometimes, life takes a little while to sink in.

My husband has been back to working each day, in an office, outside our home, for over a year and a half. It sucks.

See, when we relocated to glorious Santa Barbara five years ago, we both worked from home. We were office mates, lunch buddies, and spent every day together. For three years. It was AWESOME.

But I was worried I wouldn't meet new people, or make any friends, so I joined Meetup.com, and went out to be social most evenings. Now my schedule generally follows that initial pattern. Most evenings I have extra-curriculars...and I hate it. I have turned Me into a flake, because I schedule and then don't go to things. I make excuses about being tired, needing to stay home and cook dinner, or blame it on the dog (who clearly needs a walk with BOTH me and my husband).

But that's not the real story. Thanks to my dreaming mind, I finally understand that I'm extremely resentful of my own tendency to schedule being away from home most evenings.

Like most married people who work, evenings are now the prime hubby-time. We have to talk, laugh, play games, and get things done during evenings and weekends. And if I'm not home, I get no time with him. And I feel disconnected and sad.

So if I have a New Year's Resolution, it is to drag my husband out with me every night.

Psych! No, that's not it. It is actually to try to find balance between home-social and world-social.

As an extrovert, I get plenty of "alone time" (WTF is that?!?) all day as I work alone. But my husband still needs his alone-time on evenings and weekends, and sometimes we disagree about how much he needs. Well. Sometimes how much he needs feels personal, though it isn't. Working on that too, always and forever.

So I have to maintain some level of world-social, because that translates to his alone-time. And, of course, I don't want to blow off all of the cool friends I have made, give up the exciting groups I'm in, and miss out on the joyful adventures I have become accustomed to.

What's the answer?
It's going to blow your mind.
Meal Planning.
Seriously. Yup.

Wait, what does the fact that I don't like anything about cooking have to do with this?

Not liking cooking, I suck at it. Prep, doing, clean up, every part of cooking is awful...except the eating.

Going out in the evenings often involves yummy dinners out. But eating out contributes to less healthy food, portion challenges, and weight gain. As does being sad and eating emotions.

So sitting down each week to plan meals and inform the grocery-shopper (hubby) what is needed, is also a perfect time to plan how many nights will be in versus out.  Deciding who cooks what when, also informs whether ins and outs, social and solo, activity and rest are in balance.

So there it is: my case for how and why meal planning is the 2016 resolution that will help me put my social calendar back in balance.

Wish me luck!

Angry crushes Sad, Sad cuts Joy, Joy covers Angry

Today, in the women's quarters of Casa de Bessey, is a solo game of Emo Rock Scissors Paper that I now dub Angry Sad Joy. I'm not sure who is playing. My personal angel from the right shoulder, versus my personal devil from the left is what I suspect.

They have been at it now for almost 12 hours. The extreme fatigue in my body when I awoke tells me they kept at it all night. I'm really getting tired of the game. Every time I think one of them is poised to finally win, the other one says, "Best out of 100,000?" And they keep at it. I would think the angel would know better.

I admit that after all of the "how to" articles I read about letting go of anger and practicing compassion I find it weird that breathing and telling yourself "good stuff" over and over and over...I'm happy, I'm happy, I'm Happy, I'm grateful, I'm grateful, I'm Grateful, I'm Safe, I'm safe, I'm safe...DOES NOT WORK.

I also tried to deliver some buddha-style compassionate forgiveness and blessings on the person "hooking" me, and that made me want to vomit. Seriously. I haven't had breakfast. I was feeling too sick at the idea of trying to think good thoughts for a "crappy person." That's in quotes, and has a link because the universe delivered me some fresh strategies by a LinkedIn INfluencer that my Inbox informs me you should be following.

What the hell. It could have been revelatory. It could have given the angel an edge.
It was not. It did not.

The advice the article gives for dealing with crappy people is to ignore them. Pretend they don't exist. It doesn't seem like BAD advice; It just doesn't apply to my situation. You have to trust me that the crappy people in my life are not ignore-able for the long-term. They will come back around until I'm dead, or they are. That's my definition of "family."

In particular, the person I had dealings with yesterday does a great job of evoking My Critic from My Writing Team, which I blogged about awhile back. She might be the devil in my Angry Sad Joy game, and the poor angel really has no hope of winning.

My Critic (sorry if you read the prior post) is my defense lawyer. She is motivated by two things: joy of winning and fear of losing. When she is on, whether she is writing contracts or merely shuffling CYA paperwork, she has to be fed. And today, I found out that she doesn't only eat compliments and kindnesses, she really, REALLY likes insults.

Go ahead. Insult me. My Critic will build a case to take you down. She has access to all of my memories and she will find what she needs faster that Google search. She is a list compiler. Every bad decision, every crappy thing you've ever done is right at her fingertips, documented, with video, audio, and reliable witnesses. I know, because she makes me watch them.

There's a problem: She has no place to take her case too. If she was the angel, I guess she could make a case to God that person A, B, or C should be wiped from the face of the planet, Bambi meets Godzilla style...but she's the devil.

Who does the devil go to?
Whoever she thinks is desperate enough to sell a soul.
All she can do is make me feel bad...try to make me DO bad things to elevate awareness of the bad things someone else does, until she has an actual court to put her case in front of.
Case in front of society: BOOM!
Case in front of a custody judge: BOOM!

It isn't enough to accept the betrayal, hurt and abuse WE have undergone at the hands of Crappy Person as a part of the past, not the present. Not enough for her to finish her job once she has criticized and judged the behaviors and actions of Crappy Person, and be satisfied. She really wants to call down Godzilla.

The angel just wants the Crappy Person to change (So Easy!) into a Happy Person so we can stay out of it.

So I went for a bike ride with the dog.

I am estimating the anger levels and trauma flashbacks now reduced by 20%. I still feel 80% bad and want nothing more than to go back to bed with a fantasy novel...which evokes My Critic all over again. She thinks she's there to help me live my life, which means get-shit-done, not sleep-all-day.

The reality is that the situation I am in is Sad. There's nothing I can do to fix it, but the Angry crushes the Sad. The Angry makes it impossible to just have a good cry, be Sad and move on. The Angry is the emotional blocker, the energetic powerhouse, My Critic, My Devil.

Writing helps a little. Writing is a Joy...but I deeply fear that like the original game idea, Joy only covers Anger. It is momentary - It isn't a final win. The Anger is still there.

Writing Exercise: What smells would you want to take with you to heaven?

  • Husband's forehead
  • Cockatoo powder
  • Fresh popcorn with real butter
  • Bruising unexpected bushes
  • Fresh, post-storm seaweed
  • Hot, dry pine needles in the woods
  • Horse brushing
  • Horse manure
  • Shampoo
  • Hot, sweaty, buff guy running past on the narrow hiking trail
  • Santa Barbara Sandstone dust in the summer
  • Fresh bread
  • Cinnamon
  • Baked apples
  • Lysol
  • Dr. Bronner's peppermint soap
  • Honeysuckle
  • Starch - hot on the ironed clothes
  • Warm clothes from the dryer
  • Downy
  • Freshly poured hard cider
  • Fine cabernet
  • Hot leather seats in the car
  • Open window in a stuffy room
  • Basement
  • Concrete slab
  • Crawl space under the house
  • Wine cellar
  • Doug's pipe smoke
  • Hawaii
  • Lemon verbena
  • Grease paint make up
--------------

Exercise: Write about one smell (with prompts during continuous writing)

Open window in a stuffy room

The smell of an open window in a stuffy room hits me in the neck,
behind each ear. This part of my body relaxes as the fresh air pushes curtains aside.
There is blue sky outside and fresh green of the grass and
bushes outdoors. This smell makes me relaxed. My stuffed inside body
can expand with air, and the neck and ears get bigger, wider, longer.

The smell is always available but needs precaution from weather.
Rain into the stuffy room is best even when frills of lace get damp.
The day - end of day - is time to come home and open windows and chase out
the heavy waiting. Bird waiting for attention. Home waiting to be
lived in.

Each home needs to be allowed to steep - to become what it IS all day alone.
And then the people come in and open the windows and
let the fresh movement in. From outside. Fresh halts the decay.
Rejuvenates, sparkles the wooden floor, warms linens, releasing the
comfort smells of husbands and laundry and fabric softener.

A solitary smell. Open the window anytime, but the smell only comes when alone -
when there is time to just breathe. Maybe it could be shared with an
intimate loved one. Open windows merge the possible future and the
current moment. The outside of fresh with the inside of decay...or dust...or simply calm. Calm. Warm. Settled. Not stirred...moved...complicated. In/out and constant versus perpetual motion.

Charisma

I woke up deeply startled a few days ago to this thought, "I will never again get to rescue the Boy."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When I was in fourth or fifth grade I met a New Boy. You know...or, well, you might not...But it is important that it NOT be the boys you've been going to private, Catholic school with since kindergarten. The ones who try to get you to swing across the monkeybars so they can look up your plaid skirt. The ones you played Lego Pirate Ship with.
No this has to be a New Boy...one who doesn't know you're an uncool Tomboy. One who doesn't go to your school. One that is blonde and handsome. One who likes to use his imagination to read and play D&D. And hopefully one who thinks you're cool...or at least not TOO annoying... because you like those things too.
This Boy was my Ideal of Manhood from the day I met him until I fell in love with my husband. Quite a few boyfriends got short shrift because of this boy. I wrote dozens of letters and bad poetry for this Boy (I still have them all). Mostly because he had "charisma."
I would watch him, when allowed to tagalong with that slightly older crowd. Everyone laughed around him. Everyone looked at him. Everyone seemed - like me - to want to touch him, all the time.
And he was so different. Unlike the other boys, who would slap your hand away, or sling an insult, this boy was comfortable in a puddle of friends. Yes...Puddle. After hours on a D&D adventure, a mystery adventure...I honestly don't remember what we played at all the time...this Boy, and a few others would allow me into their "puddle" of all curling up, singing or laughing or just watching the stars young people. Such a warm, kind Boy.
He is still an amazing Boy. Well, okay Man (but in my head, he's that Boy).
In fact, realizing that this Boy would never be My Boy was instrumental in the realization that my husband was, in fact, perfectly suited to be My Boy. But that's another story...
This story has a happy ending, because the New Boy, who never was My Boy, found and wooed His Girl...and this June they got married.
I know. You're thinking "He's not Blonde...?" The east coast ate his blonde hair. He laughs and says one reason he is my friend after all these years is because I'm the only person who still always remembers him as blonde. I don't think of him as just blonde. In my heart he is in every way golden.
Actually he's my friend because I like to keep things. I try to treat the cherished trinkets of my life as I want to be treated - I want them to know they are loved, and I won't loose interest. Won't be blinded by new shinier baubles. I keep memories, and that helps me keep people. Memories like these:
The old greenhouse on D's property down the street. High shelves originally for plants, now a fort for us kids: D, the Boy, me...there may have been others, but I wouldn't remember them. Couldn't remember anyone when the Boy was there. Singing. The Boy would just sing, sweet and beautiful songs at any old time, but especially at night, even with no campfire. Just because singing is beautiful...and his voice...so beautiful it makes me cry...
OR
There is hair growing under my right armpit, but not my left. At thirteen I know I'm probably one of the last girls in my Jr. High class to get my period, but I don't care, and I don't want to think about it. I'm too embarassed to even think about it, especially after a conversation my mother has tried to have with me in the car about something her OBGYN has said when they were talking about me and being tall for my age: My mother talks about me to her Doctor! Mortifying.
P.E. is over and I hate, hate, hate Mr. Messineo for making us run all up and down the hilly campus. I'm so sweaty in my crotch I feel like I've peed my pants...and when I finally get one of the two coveted dark, close stalls go to pee...there is blood on my white underpants. And I start to shake. And they are cold when I pull them up against my skin again, which feels disgusting. It never occurs to me to tell any of the other girls. To ask any girls in my class for help.
I have an audition downtown for a play, and I'm supposed to change into "free clothes," not my private school uniform. I know my mint green "Thriller" buckled pants are going to show the blood...what can I do? What can I do? I know what I have to do, but I don't even know how I know.
I go to the office. I'm hoping Tina is there - I've known her since I was in Kindergarten, I'm comfortable with her, but no, it is Mrs. Dalmark - Jill's mom, and now everyone in the whole school will know I've gotten my period. I say I've gotten my period - how I blurted it out I have no idea - and I ask for a pad. She tries to be kindly and asks if I know how to use it. I say I do...but when I go into the clean, bright little bathroom off the office, both sides seem sticky. I have no idea what to do. Oh well. At least it will keep more blood from getting onto my pants, and I can go to my audition. I don't even remember how I got there - my mom must have taken me, but I didn't tell her anything. Too terribly, horribly embarrassed by my secret.
And there is the Boy, and for one moment that day I am so excited. Thrilled with adrenaline surprise and relief. Someone safe who I can tell my horrible secret to. Someone kind and warm who I trust after all these years and...There he is, surrounded by a group of pretty girls and boys, all older than me. In the hall of the Unitarian Church, where we are all gathering for Peace Child Auditions. I hear him sing and I see him surrounded by friends and I am now again shaking with fear that he will see the bloodstains, and I will be disgusting and embarassing to him. I do not even say hi. I watch him the whole time, wanting be near him, and hear him sing...sing to me, but going nowhere near him on the first day of my first period.
OR
Left turn onto Carillo in J's beatup, silver Datsun. Just J and me having lunch together before going back to the another class of work on the high school newspaper. Going for Pizza, with his blonde hair and my brown hair being sucked out the open windows. After the turn, I see a figure in black, bright gold hair, sitting on a low sandstone wall, reading.
Suddenly I am screaming, "Pull over! Pull over!" and hanging half out of my window crying the Boy's name. The unexpected sight of him supercharges me with a brand of excitement reserved for him alone. After a bewildered J pulls the car to a stop, I burst from it, running madly down the street and SURPRISE! He didn't hear me call as we drove - too engrossed in his book. I got to surprise him, and make him smile at me...that smile...and a promise to see him later...before running back to my lunch date, and trying to explain the Boy to J. Unpleased J, though it never ocurred to me at the time why...
OR
After I could drive, I got to "rescue" the boy. That's how I always thought of it. His parents lived up in the hills, and he was forever without transportation, sometimes without companionship. He would call my house to see if I wanted to hang out with him and give him a ride home. Did I ever! I'd pick him up from the bookstore he haunted and drive with him up into winding Santa Ynez mountains.
Mountainsides of chaparral and sandstone boulders passed, glowing in moonlight, until we plunged into a close, dark hairpin turn edged on all sides by a stand of live oak trees. So high above the town, it was often hot and windy with Santa Ana's at his house, and I loved to be there, caressed by the hot wind.
He slept in a small wedge of loft off his step dad's office. My mom was so cool: She trusted me completely, and I got to sleep there with him a few times, all curled up in that space that smelled so good to me, and was so full of Him.
If all of that sounds innocent and pathetic, I have to say it was. And when I was a bit older, I regretted that. Regretted for years not trying harder to have more of the Boy or make him mine.
Of course I know now, with a greater experience of love and sex that the Boy and I were never traveling in the same direction, at the same time. Even if I was his type (and yes, after seeing a few girlfriends, I have to say that he does have a type, and I am not it), we would never have been in love. Even if I had somehow managed to convince him to have sex with me in between the more accessible people I was "in love" with, he was unattainable, because of him, because of geography, and because of me. Who wants to destroy their golden idol by actually touching it?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"He has a wife. Soon he will have children, a new career, a new family. He will never again need to be rescued, by me or anyone else. He won't find himself alone, or lonely, and needing a friend. He is beloved, and supported, and cared for...just like I am by my husband, my best friend.

I am so happy for him.

And it huuuuurts!!! Letting go of that imaginary responsibility - the thrilling possibility of being called upon to save someone - even from loneliness, even from boredom...free of the calling...oh, deep inside it huuurtsss......"

Winter Wonderland Pictures

I'm still trying to figure out this whole "insert a photo" thing. I'm working out how to intersperse within text, instead of them all going to the top, automatically. Argh.

Here is a group of fun, winter-related pictures, starting with, Me, very cold, worshipping at the altar of the outdoor heaters.

Next, a couple of pics of Jeremy the Bird, making California snow.

Playing Catch-Up

S&L,

SO GOOD to hear from you guys! I got the Happy Holidays (Hawaiian style) Note last week sometime, but have not had “Computer Time” for really savoring the news…so I’ve been putting “you” off – apologies!

I do recognize E’s face, and in my imagination revert it back to a cute little kid I knew. Very sad that he has died. Will let M.K. know about Mrs. C. – I think he was in her class.

MM News: M.K. and I both got “please send money” letters this year from H.H. Oddly enough, I was reflecting that if she had signed it herself, or said “Hi!” or anything, I might actually have sent some. So much for impersonal fundraising. We all know it doesn't work.

I’ve also been infrequently alternating between browsing and deleting the MM Weekly Newsletter. It is like reading a newspaper from a foreign country, or other world…?! So many day-to-day things that do not affect me and that I couldn’t care less about…and yet they are somehow connected to me…

I wrote (and subsequently deleted by accident ) an incredibly humorous blog entry about how Count Von Count from Sesame Street was a major contributor to the Rise and Popularity of Goth culture in the 80s and 90s. When I reconstruct, I will send the link. I do love the blogging thing, and am still working towards being more consistent. I luvluvluvluvluv the writing process so much, and I feel so ALIVE when I give myself the time and permission to wallow in words…I need to support that outlet and try to discover why it is so hard to prioritize!

I was at one of the first events of the season: “A Buddhist and a Pagan Throw a Holiday Party,” and actually met one of Father V’s Nephews. (Don’t ask me how that topic rolled around.) It was unbelievably fun to hear about his “family” life – although really, he has been living in the Mission since age 13 (!?!?!), so his blood relatives are probably less his family than his brethren and his parish.

In one of those lovely synchronous folds that the universe wraps us up in, I went from thinking and reflecting on Father V. and his effect on my life, to accidentally (Free Tickets!) seeing this amazing Broadway show called “Doubt.” The play was about two nuns and a priest in a Catholic School and the suspicion of improper interaction between one of the boy students and the priest. The play was very fascinating, if often uncomfortable, and an incredibly well constructed, non-preachy message (Even if you count the actual sermons written into the play). If you get a chance to see it, or read the play, I recommend it as a wonderful reflection exercise.

I had a disappointing Halloween and Birthday visit to Arizona. I have not seen much of my Niece, primarily because her mother seems to be using her as a pawn in the power/control fight between herself and M.K. Sad, sad, sad…

On the other hand, I had a very nice afternoon with my brother on his birthday: He practiced the banjo while I sat all curled up on his couch and we just talked and laughed. Amazing. My father made home-made peanut and cashew brittle, packed in festive holiday tins for friends and family members (Aliens have removed and replaced the man I knew as a child). One of the very few people in my life who did not press any sweets on me – he asked, very respectfully, if I wanted some, since he knew I was cautious about food, sweets, etc. WOW.

In an odd turn of events, my mother and I continue to grow farther apart and spend less and less time together; What time we do spend is strained and generally ends in a nasty fight of some kind. She was perfectly awful to me during Thanksgiving, and doesn’t really have time to devote to communicating about why. Pshaw.

I’m maintaining my current weight successfully and thinking about some cooking and nutrition education classes so that I can be more informed about what I put in my body. I’m looking forward to the holiday week when I will have an opportunity to “catch up” on tasks I’ve put off: Making my Memory Albums, writing, updating my resume and looking around at the job market, reading, supporting my husband (who is in a HUGE push right now for the Consumer Electronics show in Jan).

I had this wonderful tarot reading (never had one before) at Dickens Faire (like Renaissance Faire, only….you get it!) which told me to REST and reflect deeply on my career / work in the world. I am almost at 6 years with my company, 4 of those working 4 days a week, and I definitely feel like it is time to make a decision about “hunkering down” in my non-challenging, secure corporate job, OR head back out into the challenging and interesting and creative world of “real work.” Both have their appeal and offer many opportunities!

I’m also more and more interested in changing my “home” environment. I need about 400sq feet more space for my sanity, and I’m feeling less and less safe in my neighborhood. 2/3 of our closest neighbors have been robbed in the past year and even the thought of being a “victim” brings up SUCH horrible baggagy reactions in me. Wrote a bit about that in my blog awhile back…which you are welcome to read anytime, BTW.

Okay, speaking of work, I should go find some to do. Will write more when I get a chance to check out your holiday message.

Mother of a Rant

The Mother Wrote (TMW):
Daughter, Never mind, I'll catch a shuttle. Definitely sounds like your friend's work is crazed and I don't want to impose or add any more to that. I didn't realize that where you and I are going are in opposite directions.

The Adult Daughter Replied (TADR):

Yes. Ex-Husband's warehouse location is West, very close to the airport, and where I am going is South East.

TMW:

Sorry you felt you were having to "take care of me." I wasn't looking to be taken care of.

TADR:

Good to know. Carpooling is always desireable when it makes sense, but since we were not going to the same places, I didn't really "get it" when you proposed it. I think I said that it didn't make sense to me pretty clearly.

After I wrote to you that we were not going in the same direction - literally - you then asked Ex-Husband if you could get a ride from him, or would he please send shuttle info. Mother, that seemed like a pretty desperate act to me. Why would you ask Ex-Husband, or expect that he would be willing to help you in any way? Ex-Husband is angry with you and does not want to help you. Why would you ask him?

I can think of only one reason: You feel he "owes" it to you. People don't like to do nice things for each other out of a sense of obligation, Mother.

No matter why you did it, it made me sad for you and for him that you had asked for help. I felt bad that I was not able to "take care of you," meaning, have you get the help you wanted from someone you wanted it from. You really seemed to want help - even if you had to get it from Ex-Husband.

Because I am Adult Daughter, I felt like I needed to say, "Sure, if you can't find another ride, I can help." Which is still true, but you have to take the help how / when it is offered. I can help you, but you have to do it my way. It is my help to give. You need to respect my friend's time and not take advantage of a friend's generosity and love for me to make your life a little easier.

TMW:

I was just coming from the place where it made sense to see if we could coordinate transportation since we are arriving at almost exactly the same time (you know, like carpooling). Would not have even suggested it if arrival times were different.

Glad to hear you're feeling better. Hope you're over your hurt feelings by the time I see you on Sunday.

TADR:

I think part of the problem is the "hurt" doesn't go away. Especially without any acknowledgement / apologies or attempt to make it different the next time. It just gets worse and worse each time, and, Mother, we seem to be able to spend less and less time together without hurting each other again. Pretty nasty.

My theory is that you're prickly because of Some Thing, and I'm prickly because of Some Thing Else. Doesn't make for a good combination.

TMW:

I was over my hurt feelings from you being mean to me until your recent emails. (I decided I should have been more patient and understanding since you were sick.)

TADR:

That is interesting. Sick shouldn't have much to do with it. My reaction right now is that I have no idea why your feelings were hurt.

As far as I can tell, you're feelings got hurt because I tried to convince you to stay until Monday, like you'd previously planned, in case I needed help with Jeremy The Cockatoo. Either with boarding him at your place or taking him to Birdie Hotel.

Why did that hurt or upset you? I would not have asked if I hadn't REALLY needed the help. If you hadn't already been here, and going back to Santa Barbara. With Jeremy there are so few options. I cannot put him in a shuttle or a taxi.

I was really scared and upset about termites in my house. You said you were staying until Monday, so I called all over to try to find someone who could look at the termites as early as possible on Monday (since no one was available the holiday weekend). We talked about this when you arrived Wednesday, while we made banana pumpkin bread.

TMW:

Seems like it's OK for you to have me go out of my way to help out and/or take care of your needs (like waiting around for the termite guy, driving in the rain, and not getting back into SB in time to get bird vegies and/or keeping Jeremy if your house needed tenting) but not the other way around.

TADR:

Ah, and here I feel like you are very inaccurate. The idea that you think this makes me really angry. This is what you think of Your Sister too. And what you think of Ex-Husband. You appear to think everyone around you expects an unequal relationship.

The Adult Son and I have had that expectation, since we're your kids, HOWEVER, for a long time now, I DO NOT BEHAVE THAT WAY.

I have been trying to treat you just the same as everyone else. When you have needs, and you ask me to help, like with taxes, I say yes or no. Like with your house, yes or no. Like with crazy schemes for WorldCon. Yes, or No. Like with "I want to go to Hawaii for my birthday." Yes or No.

We each get into trouble when it is not that cut and dry, Mother. You did NOT say, "I need to leave, can you help me pack up?" If you had, I would have said, "No. I just puked for eight hours, that isn't going to happen." Instead you said something like, "Its going to rain, I'm thinking of leaving." To which I replied by trying to convince you not to go because I needed your help.

Perhaps it was unfair of me to make my case for why I needed the help so badly. Perhaps you felt guilty to say no. In any case, Mother, these are not excuses for being hurtful.

Mother, it is a situation of expectations. I specifically asked you when you were coming to visit and staying, and you said until Monday.

I asked again because I was *desperately* trying to find a termite guy that could come out before you left, just in case we had to tent and I had to send Jeremy away. When you arrived Wednesday, I went over the whole termite thing with you, and you did not seem put-out.

If I had asked you more clearly Wed night "I need you to stay until Monday, and if the house needs to be tented, take Jeremy either to your place, or to Jaime's" I believe you probably would have said YES. You certainly implied yes, while we were talking that night.

All that changed from then until you left was YOU. You wanted to do something else because of the rain, your needs changed, and so you bailed on me. That is part one of why I was hurt and angry.

Part two of hurt and angry layers on because none of the above that you list as your "needs" (rain, bird veggies) is anything I had any control over or previous knowledge of. I can't have "done it" to you, but you certainly took out your frustration on me.

To be clear, I didn't spend 8 hours puking to ruin your Sunday morning. I didn't do a rain-dance, or forget to close up your house before you left so that you would be stressed out. I didn't rent movies that I thought would specifically be fun to watch with YOU so that I could taunt you with "ha, ha, you have to leave, so I'm going to watch movies you wish you could see..."

The ONLY reason I left my bed Sunday, given how completely AWFUL I felt, was because I knew you were there, and I had specifically rented movies for us to watch TOGETHER. I was damned if I was going to stay in bed, no matter what.

Instead of a nice, restful day of fun movies, I was told you were leaving. I said I needed your help, and you didn't even say "No, that doesn't work for me, I need to leave." You were snide and instead said something like "Well, I'm *so* *sorry* that I can't stay and help you, and take care of your bird and I'll just be out of your way if you'll show me my turkey..."

What you are hurt by, as far as I can tell, is your imagination. It FREAKS ME OUT because it is very Your Sister-Like. I'm having conversations with you that just dissappear into the ether.

It was completely sickening. Not as sickening as you trying to HUG me after you had just been _off_the_chart_ nasty.

I get that you feel bad. I feel bad about the whole thing too, even if I can't figure out what set you off. But don't expect me to be all smiles and stick my damn neck out again by being nice to you. And don't expect me to WANT to help you when you were rotten.

It occurs to me at the last to ask whether you are actually okay with finding your own transportation tomorrow, or whether you are actually really upset and dissapointed?

I care, so I'd like to know the answer...and at the same time, I couldn't care less.

Sick of Family

I've seen every maternal blood relative I have on this earth over the past week and I AM DONE.

I just can't take anymore for awhile.

The gushing flow of stories are just too cold prickly and full of sadness to keep on wading through them. I'm going to stop.

..........

Of course, I'm returning to this post over a week later and I can't even recall what was so particularly awful.

And since turning a very potent experience into a story where *I* wasn't involved worked well before, I think I'll try that hand again.

Not Arachnaphobic

My husband posted this to his blog on the 31st:

Not a story about Black Widow Spiders

On Sunday, Yvette and I were rearranging stuff in the garage in preparation for the roofing guys to come in and tear the roof off way too early in the morning on Monday. During the course of moving all the boxes around and covering stuff up, we managed to disturb a spider. I looked over at Yvette, and I saw a large, globular black spider crawling up her neck.

Now, it so happens that Black Widow spiders aren't all that uncommon around here, and from a few feet away, this thing really, really looked like a Black Widow. I attempted to calmly say "Hold still" so I could brush it off her without her getting bitten, but apparently my eyes gave me away, and Yvette totally freaked out. So she's shaking all of her clothing out and moving around, while I'm trying to get her to stand still so I can find the stupid spider and get it off her before she gets bitten.

Mentioning that I thought the spider was a Black Widow was decidedly not helpful. It probably would have been comical if we weren't doing such a good job of completely panicking each other. Yvette managed to get the spider off of herself, and I eventually recovered it. It turned out to most likely be Steatoda grossa, a much
less dangerous relative of the Black Widow.

After the incident, Yvette and I talked about what we might have done differently. We didn't really come up with anything, other than possibly running "Spider Drills". I'd just walk up to her and calmly say "Don't move" or something similar, and we'd practice not freaking each other out. I really hated the feeling of the whole thing spiraling out of control like that, with everything I said and did just making the situation worse.

I wanted to tell my own version of the story as I remember, or don't remember, it because there are two funny things and one "interesting" one.

First, you have to know what I'm wearing during this panic: Comfy cotton Eddie Bauer Crossover Tank and sweatpants. That becomes important, because my arms, shoulders and neck were all exposed.

There are two reasons I panicked. The first one is that I believe I "sensed" the spider. When Mark first gave me THAT LOOK, instead of freezing in place and taking a deep breath (something I'd like to learn to do for the future), I took a swipe at my own right neck/shoulder area and jumped a foot to the left (Screaming like a banshee). Once the flight response kicked in, I COULD NOT STOP doing this shivery mini-bolt from place to place.

What happened next is that I had somehow obscured the spider (or perhaps had gotten him off me). Mark couldn't get close to me to see it, and when he did, he started gently trying to figure out if the spider had escaped into my hair. MY HAIR?!?!?!?

A few light, tickling searches through the curls, and there was MUCH more screaming and bending over and shaking and clawing and panic. Finally, even though only moments have passed, I'm trying to get calm, saying "What do I do?! What do I do?!" and Mark replies, "You need to get all your clothes off NOW and go take a shower."

Here's the funny bit: I tear off my top and drop my pants, screaming and wobbling with adrenaline...only to suddenly realize the garage door is up, and I am naked to the whole neighborhood. Always a winner for spreading CALM.

I ran to the shower, washing my hair bent over forward, hoping that it would prevent the spider in my hair from crawling down my naked back. I was in there a LONG time, feeling desperately like I couldn't get clean, shaking from the epinephrine aftershocks.

What is interesting is that normally, Mark can keep me pretty calm - I trust him completely. I blame my spider-sense for the initial panic, and hope that over the next 50 years of our marriage we do figure out how to better care for each other in crisis. I *do* think Spider Drills are a good idea.
